About us

Rooted in rhythm.
Shaped by tradition.

Natya Shastralaya School of Bharathanatyam, Abhiramapuram, Chennai: the Pandanallur dance form, taught step by step with care, discipline and devotion.

Our story

A school built on a mother's vision.

Natya Shastralaya was founded by Rajalakshmi Sairam, mother of Guru Smt. Abirami Uwenshankar. Today the school is guided by Guru Smt. Abirami Uwenshankar, who carries the Pandanallur dance form forward with care, discipline and devotion.

Every student begins with the first adavu and is taken, level by level, from posture and rhythm to expression, repertoire and the arangetram, the solo debut on stage.

Alongside the dance itself, students learn the theory behind it: the Natya Shastra and the Abhinaya Darpanam, talam and sollukattu, and the language of abhinaya.
